Carpe Diem[ˈkɑrpɪ ˈdiɛm]：，
拉丁文，原意是Seize the day(抓住這一天)->引申意為「把握光陰，活在當下」(有人翻成「及時行樂」)。
(原句是 "Carpe diem quam minimum credula postero"，翻成英文是 "Seize the day and place no trust in tomorrow")，

與“YOLO(You Only Live Once)” 一樣，就是呼籲人要把握時間。


字根：
Carpe diem ->carpe(cap-的變形), seize + diem(=di-的變形), day

一、個人覺得『Carpe Diem』翻成「及時行樂」，離「抓住這一天」遠了些。
enjoy the day的方式有很多種，「及時行樂」只是其中的一種。

二、在「春風化雨」（DEAD POETS SOCIETY）電影中，基亭老師(羅賓威廉斯演)在第一堂課，要學生們走出教室，仔細看走廊牆壁上貼滿校友的舊照片(照片上的人物，可能不少人都已經作古)，並要他們靠近一些，仔細聆聽，是否聽到照片之人對他們說 Carpe---- Carpe----carpe diem, seize the day(「把握…」、「把握…」、「把握今朝」)？

※片語背不起來，很多時候是不了解介系詞在當中的意思。搞定介系詞，片語就好背多了

1. It's still early. Let's go to the airport lounge.
英語的 resting-place 雖然有“休息處”的意思，但更經常的是用來指“墳墓”， 即“最後安息之處”。因此，把“休息處”說成 resting-place 不合適。說成 rest-room ，但更不妥，因為英語中的 rest-room 是“廁所”。

Lounge 的英文解釋是： A public waiting room, as in a hotel or an air terminal, often having smoking or lavatory facilities. 一間公共的等候室，比如在旅館裡或機場，經常有吸煙或衛生設備。 lobby 也有休息室的意思，特別指公部門的休息室，它的英文解釋為： A public room next to the assembly chamber of a legislative body. 立法院大廳邊上的公共活動室。


2. So that's how it is. I understand soon after your explanation.
So it is 的意思是“的確如此”，它是用來表示贊成對方觀點的贊同的。例如：
A: It is a fine day today!
B: So it is.

而在表達恍然大悟時，英文要用 So that's how it is 或 So that explains it, 或更簡單地道的說法 Oh, I see.


3. Daddy painted the desk with a coat of paint.
layer 和 coat ，雖然翻譯成中文都是“層”，但用法卻不同。如： Onions have layers ( 洋蔥是一層一層的)，但塗上一層油漆卻要用 coat 。鍍鋅，鍍銅之類的用 layer 都是錯列，應該用 coat 。(spank：極薄的一層，用coat)


4. Let's begin at/with page 10.
很多人搞不清楚 Begin 和 start ，事實上 begin 、 end ； start 、 stop 剛好可以對照的兩組詞。 begin 的相反詞是 end ； start 的相反詞是 stop.

begin 表示“開始”，其內涵是“使處於進程中”：
Work on the building had begun before she left. 這座房子在她離開之前就已經動工了。

The meeting began last week. 那次會議是上星期開始的。 ( 這句用 start 也可以，但會議是個“過程”，在這個意義上用 begin 更好 ) 。

start 表示“開始”，其內涵是“啟動”。
He started to complain about this wicked world. 他開始抱怨這萬惡的世道了。

5. Please give me another chance, and I'll make a difference.
有關 difference 有兩個重要的片語：
make a difference （有很大不同）或 make no differences （沒什麼不同）。

Pet phrase︰英文的口頭禪

　有一句好的英文口頭禪（pet phrase），對你的溝通幫助，可能會超乎你的想像。

　「口頭禪」原本禪宗用語，指未經心靈證悟就把一些現成的經言和公案掛在嘴邊，裝得一付得道的樣子。演變到現在，口頭禪成了個人習慣用語的代名詞，無意識脫口而出。因為無意識，才真正看到後面深藏的潛意識。

　「你知道吧」是北京人的口頭禪。廣東人是「有沒有搞錯」。臺灣人是「不好意思」、「拜託」則折射出內在的某種「不安」與「優雅」交錯的矛盾心境……

　美國總統歐巴馬最常用的一句話是“let me be clear”。他每一次演講內容，一定有這句話，有時甚至不只用一次。於是，大家開始解析，這個口頭禪究竟有什麼特殊意思？我們來看看口頭禪背後有哪些可能的隱涵的意義：

　1. To be honest, to tell you the truth, certainly, definitely etc.

　「說真的、老實說、的確、不騙你」

　People who speak these phrases very often usually worry that others might misunderstand what they say. They are impetuous.

　2. Be supposed to, should, must, ought to etc.

　「應該、必須、必定會」

　These people are very confident about themselves, reasonable and sober. They believe that they can persuade others. BTW, those leaders prefer to say these words.

　3. It is said that, people say that, they say that, be told that etc.

　「聽說、據說、聽人說」

　These guys are well informed but hesitant. Also, these sophisticated people usually say these words.

　4. Perhaps, Maybe, Probably etc.

　「可能是吧、或許是吧、大概是吧」

　These guys are very defensive. They seldom tell others what they are thinking. They are calm. The politicians say these words frequently.

　5. But, However, Nevertheless etc.

　「但是，不過」

　They use“However”to protect themselves. To some extent, it reflects that these guys are mild.

　6. Uh, Ah...

　「啊、呀；這個、這個；嗯、嗯」

　These guys are usually lack of words when talking with others. They are dull too.

　

　你的口頭禪是什麼？

　以下是美國人常用的口頭禪，也許你可以在其中選一個好用的，像業務性質工作，把“you won,t regret it”當口頭禪，保證你不後悔。

　1. I was being polite. 我這是在說客氣話。

　polite 這個字，意思是「有禮貌的」。當然你若要說一個人有禮貌，你可以說He is polite. 或是He has good manners. 不過I was being polite. 這句話是指「我這是在說客氣話」。

　2. So that explains it. 原來如此。

　有時候事情的來龍去脈渾沌不清，讓人摸不著頭腦，剛好有人一句話點醒了你，讓你豁然開朗，這會兒你就可以用上這句話So that explains it/everything.「這就都說得通了。」

　3. I feel the same way. 我有同感。

　當他人說出了你的感覺，你再同意也不過的時候，你就可以用上這句話I feel the same way.「我有同感。」這句話不但可以讓你避免把同樣的話再講一次，幫你省了不少口水，還可以讓對方覺得自己的意見被尊重呢。I feel the same way. 趕快記起來。

　4. No hard feelings. 別見怪！

　難免有時候會開玩笑過了頭，有時講話衝激怒了人，這時候No hard feelings. 這句口頭禪很好用，意思是「請別見怪，不傷和氣」。

　5. I can,t help myself. 我無法控制自己。

　I can,t help myself. 這句話是「我不得不；我情不自禁。」指的是對自己的無能為力。I can,t help... 這個口頭禪很好用，若是你遇到一個情況，想要說「我不禁納悶了起來。」在美語中你就可以直接說: I can,t help but wonder.

　6. I must be losing it. 我一定是瘋了！

　這句話當中的it是指「理智」，所以lose it的意思就是「失去理智」，也就是「發瘋」的意思。someone must be losing it. 這句話的使用時機，是當你覺得有誰做出了脫離常軌的舉動，你料想「……一定是瘋了」。

　7. Why all the trouble? 幹嘛大費周章。

　這句口頭禪是當一件事明明輕而易舉地就可以完成，卻有人要拐彎抹角做些事倍功半的白工，你就可以對他說 Why all the trouble?

　8. even up the odds 終於扳回一城。

　odds是「勝算，成功的可能性」，通常用在賭博或是比賽的場合。你可以說The odds are high. 來表示「勝算高」。even 在這當作動詞使用，是「使相等」的意思，因而even up the odds則可解釋為「扳回劣勢」。

　9. You won,t regret it. 你不會後悔的。

　這是業務人員掛在口上最好的一句口頭禪。regret是指「後悔，懊惱」You won,t regret it. 的意思為「你不會後悔的」。You won,t regret it.這句話常用在自己掛保證，譬如在作投資、店員作產品推銷……等。

　10. Hit the road. 上路了

　A: Do you want to come in for some coffee?

　B: No. I,m running late. I really need to hit the road. 不了。我快遲到了，得上路了。

　“Hit the road”的“hit”有「去」的意思。例如，你每周去健身房2次，你就可以說“I hit the gym twice a week.”。

　11. suck 差勁；糟透了

　A: We,ve just now missed the bus, and the next one won,t come for another 45 minutes. 我們剛錯過公車了；下一班(車)還要45分鐘才會來。

　B: That sucks. 真糟糕！

　“suck”是「差勁」的意思。“That movie sucks.”是「那部電影真是糟透了」的意思。

　12. on the nose （時間的）整點；完全

　A: What time is it?

　B: It,s six pm on the nose. 下午6點整。

　“on the nose”除了當時間整點外，還有「完全」(＝exactly) 的意思。如果你的心事被一個朋友看透了。你就可以對他說：Your guess was right on the nose. (你的猜測完全正確。)

　13. on the spot 讓（某人）在壓力下作決定；當場

　A: So, what do you say? Should we stay or leave?

　B: Hey! Don,t put me on the spot. How should I know? 別讓我當下作決定！我哪知道！

　在壓力很大的狀況下做決定，就是這裡的“be put on the spot”。“on the spot”的另一個用法是「當場」的意思。筆記電腦送修，有人馬上當場幫你修好，就算“They fixed your laptop on the spot.”

　14. cut someone loose　斷絕關係

　loose的意思為「鬆開的，未受控制的」，cut someone loose原本的意思是「解開某人的關係」，引申為「與……切斷關係，把某人甩掉」，例如She cut loose from her sponsors and decided to try to fund herself instead.。

　15. It,s not like that. 不是那樣的

　It,s not like that. 這句口頭禪專門用來闢謠的。有人誤會了一件事的來龍去脈，你就可以跟他說It,s not like that.「不是那樣的。」當然隨著語氣及情境的不同，It,s not like that. 這句話也有可能是硬拗的口吻。

　16. Good thing... 還好，幸好…

　要表達「還好，幸好…」的語氣，你就可以用Good thing...做開頭。這個口頭禪簡單又好用，在Good thing後面加上完整的句子就可以。

　17. I don,t believe you,re bringing this up. 真不敢相信你會這麼說。

　bring something up是指「提到（某件事）」。你沒想到對方會提起這件事，惹起眾怒，你可以說 I don,t believe you,re bringing this up.。而反過來說，若你很高興對方主動提起了一件事，你也可以用這個片語，自然說出I am glad you are bringing this up.

　18. There,s no other way of saying it. 沒有別種說法。

　有時候不管你再怎麼轉、再怎麼拗，也沒有辦法更婉轉或是避開一些絕對會出現的字， 這時候你就可以用上There,s no other way of saying it. 這句話，來表達自己避無可避的為難，因為「沒有別種說法」。

　19. That will not always be the case. 事情不會永遠是這樣。

　case這個字有「情況」的意思，That will be the case.就是指「情況就是這樣了。」但是你若覺得現在的情況只會是暫時，不會長久，你就可以反過來說That will not always be the case.「事情不會永遠是這樣。」

　20. Call it a day. 到此為止

　這個片語字面上意思是「就叫它做一天」。引申為「到此為止，就這樣結束。」當你想要結束一件事，不再追究，或是開會散會前、上課結束前，下班前，都可以說Let,s call it a day.「今天就到這裡。」

cater to是迎合的意思。

My sister-in-law does not eat beef or pork, so in order to cater to her taste, I will make either fish or chicken for dinner when she comes.

《字彙的力量》堪稱是我這幾年遇到最「不尋常」的一本書。

《字彙的力量》獲選為「2011博客來語言電腦年度之最」，博客來希望編輯談談這本書出版過程中的甘苦。老實說，語言書的編輯過程，有趣的事情並不多，痛苦的經驗倒是一籮筐，而《字彙的力量》堪稱是我這幾年遇到最「不尋常」的一本書。

《字彙的力量》在美國是長銷型的暢銷書，不過，由於與台灣學習英語的方式有所差異，國外的語言學習暢銷書在中文化後，鮮少能有亮眼的成績。因此，我們在獲得授權後，對於這本書的定位一直拿捏不定，內容究竟該怎麼呈現，對台灣讀者才會有幫助？就這樣，在反覆討論及擱置中就過了幾年......。

總算，在各部門大致達成共識後，我便開始準備作業，雖然早有如臨大敵的心理準備，但過程還是讓我嘗盡苦頭。一開始，翻譯就出現危機警訊，譯者幾乎花了一年時間才完成。因為語言書得保留英語學習的成分，哪些該翻譯成中文？哪些該保留原文？就讓譯者傷透腦筋。試想，一本英語學習書，如果內容全都翻成中文了，那還有什麼好學呢？所以這本書的翻譯，花了比一般書籍多出好幾倍的時間才完成。

等到翻譯完成，開始接手編輯作業後，我發現還是有許多地方的翻譯都過了頭，將不少有學習作用的英文句子都譯成中文了。為了要適當地呈現英文，保有它英語學習的重責大任，又不能因中英文夾雜，顯得破碎而無法閱讀，於是我從頭開始，一字一句對照原文，務求保留原文的精華。回想那段日子，每天打開電腦就是一頭栽進去，反覆地校對、整稿，不知不覺幾個月就過去了，腦細胞也死得差不多了（公司竟然還沒叫我走路）。這本《字彙的力量》，主編和我前後至少校訂了八次以上，兩個人到最後都已呈現精神恍惚的狀態。

好不容易，內容編輯告一段落，接下來的錄音更是十足地具有「挑戰性」。作者在書中特別指出，有些字彙美國人也常常會唸錯。沒想到，正式錄音時，有20多年經驗的美籍專業錄音員還真的唸錯了！所以在錄音間裡，我必須不停地打斷資深錄音員，「糾正」他們的發音（很諷刺吧），整個錄音過程就是不斷地停下來查詢字典，確認正確發音後再重錄。例如，從動物園zoo [zu] 衍生而來的zoology，你會怎麼唸？

其實我曾對書中的進階字彙抱持過疑惑，這些難字為什麼對台灣讀者有幫助？後來，在編輯過程中，我逐漸發現原來並非這些字太難，而是我們太習慣於只使用簡單的字彙，以至於忘記要自我挑戰、進一步提升英語能力，進階的單字絕對是必需的！自己後來在看原文小說時，只要看到曾在《字彙的力量》出現過的單字，都會在心裡興奮地吶喊YES，因為我又多學會了一個字彙。

雖然編輯過程一路跌跌撞撞，花了將近兩年的時間，總算才熬出這本544頁的年度重量級大書。優異的銷售成績，以及讀者們熱烈而正面的評價，就是給我們的最大鼓勵，讓我們有更多的動力與願景，繼續努力，出版更多的好書，以饗讀者。當然，最開心的，莫過於《字彙的力量》被博客來評選為2011語言電腦類的「年度之最」，除了感謝所有讀者的支持之外，也證明大家的選擇都是sagacious（不認識這個字？還不趕快去買一本《字彙的力量》！）。文/黃炯睿（資深編輯）
