later本身可以當一個形容詞用,查了字典也有這樣的用法,所以一應該是正確且idiomatic的用法,我覺得這應該是個慣用法的問題

既然有half，就表示某個單位被分成兩個次單位。
用latter比較合理一點。

至於late，我想是用在單一單位。
in the late 18th century.
in the late June.
