Listen to a talk given by an Economics professor
Let me tell you about an exhibit in the university museum that you might want to see. There are showing a collection of coins and paper money used in North America in the last two hundred years. The exhibit also includes historical facts about the various forms of currency. One interesting item I saw there was a currency note from Canada ---a piece of paper money worth only 25 cents. I've never seen a bill worth so little. The Canadian government issued the notes in 1870 as a temporary solution to a shortage of coins. The plan was to use them for only a few years until enough coins could be made. The people found the bills so useful that the Canadian government printed more in 1900 and 1923. Most people simply like the bills because they were easy to hold in a purse or a pocket or to send through the mail. They are only about half the size as the current bills. But what's unusual is the way the soldiers used them. They would stick them down in their boots to prevent the boots from rubbing against their skin. You can't image how irritated your shrinks may get your boots' rubber against them all day. So the durable paper really helped. As a result, they became known as shrink plasters. The bank of Canada finally recalled the shrink plasters in 1935 and ironically those that were not destroyed are now valuable collect this item like the one on display at the museum.

127. What is the talk mainly about?

まAn old type of Canadian money
まThe history of the Bank of Canada
まWhy Canadians collect paper money
まThe spending habits of Canadian shoppers A

128. Why did the Canadian government begin printing the
currency note?

まTo simplify purchases by mail
まTo honor a Canadian soldier
まTo substitute for coins in short supply
まTo make storing money easy C

129. According to the professor, why did most people like
the currency notes when they were first issued?

まThey were colorful.
まThey were collectors' items.
まThey were shiny.
まThey were a convenient size. D

130. According to the professor, what did many soldiers do
with the currency notes?

まSent them home to their families
まUsed them as bookmarks
まPadded their boots
まPolished their shoes C

131. What does the professor say about the present status of
the currency notes?

まThey are the most common currency.
まThey are no longer used as money.
まThey are used only by the military.
まThey have decreased in monetary value. B

所謂理論,就是知道為什麼,但卻什麼都行不通;
所謂實務,就是不知道為什麼,但是什麼都行得通;
