你可以想像"as a group"不存在
所以是make his letters the rival of the best novels
也就是你提到的句型 make + O( 受詞) + OC ( 受詞補語)

as a group是指說
他的letters整個是唯一體來說,是當代best novel 的rival

我也說不上來為什麼錯,直覺地有點不順..(逃~~~~)
一方面只是覺得沒有那麼簡潔,有點囉唆
一方面如果拿掉所有形容來看這句
make his letters a group不如make his letters the rival來的句意清楚
這個可能請高人在幫忙回答一下 我講得不太清楚

看起來可以說成是
B君的觀察力使他的信成為一群 而這一群可與當時最好小說匹敵

D的 letters as a group 四個字是當作make的受詞 as a group修飾letters
所有的信一整體來看 可與當時最好小說匹敵
意思應該是 所有信上的內容綜合起來看 會像一部小說

his letters 和 a group數量不同不能直接當補語~~
還有能用片語~儘量少用which is子句~
