Principally, participal does not modify the preceding noun when it put the bottom of the sentence.

so, in this case, "establishing and using" does not modify the nearest noun " conqueror " but the subject " Athens ".

E改成establishing and using就變成形容原句主詞Athens -> 雅典建造... -> 不合理的陳述 (an absurd statement)

這就是莫老所說的: 非限定用法不能改成省略子句
who前面有, -> 非限定形容緊鄰的N -> 不可改省略子句

如果把was taken在加上E答案的兩個動詞,就成了
Athens was taken....,Conqueror, the turkish sultan, establishing....and using............

如此一來就變成Athens做這三個動作了
所以答案(e)的解釋說Establishing and using illogically modify Athens.

樓上說的沒錯, 分詞可以修飾主句的主詞 或是修飾前面那一句伴隨的狀態,
另一個講法是, 分詞和關代的不同, 是可以不修飾最近的名詞
所以OG才會說E的establishing是Athens 的動作

只要不要誤以為是Athens was establishing and using(過去進行式) ..就ok啦~
因為這裡的establishing 是establised變來的, 只是因為主動所以改成Ving形式

E的缺陷，在於改分詞後有兩個問題

第一個如前述，改分詞後，動詞行為者指涉不清

第二個是改分詞後，原本過去式的表達不見了

只是感到狐疑的是Athens應該不會自己establish跟use吧,為何會有指涉不清的問題呢????

依照正確答案A所寫的used the Acropolis as a fortress
所以可以得到use x as y的片語才是對的

請問大大我這樣看是對的嗎??
