因為題目想表現的是比他(the man)有錢,受良好教育,處事更圓融的人
所以真的在比較的是這些人和他
也就是說,原句應該是這樣的
They were wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than he was.
在比較主詞的時候,後面的動詞原型是不省略的;但若是對句意沒有影響,也就是說讀者不會認為是在比較受詞或是補語之其他類的東西,動詞原型可以省略
ex:I am taller than he (is)通常省略,因為也沒有別的受詞或補語,名詞片語等在干擾.
ex: I love you more than he does.(我比他更愛你)我和他在作比較,一樣是主詞比較,可是因為原句後面有受格在,所以會造成干擾,故動詞不省略
ex:I love you more than him.(我愛你超過愛他),受格在作比較,不會有動詞出現
在比較時用代名詞可能比較好判斷是主詞在比還是受格/補語在比,可是當兩個都是物品的時候,若又碰到不認識的字,只好藉由有無動詞來判斷比的是主格還是受格
E的was是被省略的,其實它可以存在
