the answer is (E)
my choice is C: because (C) undermines the example of Canada; therefore, other factors besides common tongue determin the long survival of a nation.
(E) seems to provide only one example, but can one example apply to all situation?
so I think C is better.

Can anyone help me by pointing out any logic flaw I made?

E says that even Switzerland has three different languagus, it still survive for a thousand years. This choice undermines the first sentence the author claim:

No nation can long survive unless its people are united by a common tongue"

(in other word, E gives an example that DID survive)
