Some Q&A about Haas

Dear all:

The following is some questions I asked fujen64 several days ago. I think some of you should also be interested in these questions. Therefore I share them with you all. Thanks for fujen64's very kindly help.

1) The marketing curriculum in Haas ranks high in US NEWS. But it seems that in its website or brochure Haas does not particularly stress this point. Is Haas a good choice for people concentrating on marketing field?

I think every top b-school will offer great marketing courses and give you very strong training in marketing area. So I don’t think academic training will be a big difference.
I admit many high-tech companies come here to recruit MBA students for positions relating to marketing and finance because of our location near Silicon Valley and SF.
However, what I concern is that whether the school can fit your career plan (which city, industry, job function)
I believe marketing is a strong area in Haas and you can get lots of resources here no matter what industries (healthcare, high-tech, consumer products, retails etc.)

2) Do most of the Haas students coming from Taiwan have high-tech work experience? (Haas is often considered a business school of techies)

Ya..it's also my stereotype before I came here.
But only 1 of 10 Taiwanese students has engineering background and all of us have diverse working experience and backgrounds.
As I am here, I can feel it is a really diverse community. I can fully take advantages of my outstanding classmates and learn lots from them. For example, my study group is combined with Healthcare/High Tech/Army/Marketing backgrounds.
Management of Tech is just one of our strengths.

3)Is there any difference between round1 and round2 ?

Each has it’s advantage. However, my opinion is that prepare as well and soon as possible. You should have confidence in your application before you submit^^

因為雖然從businessweek上看到的average age都是28.29
可是據我與其他今年去的新生的聯繫好像大部分的學生都還是2001左右畢業的
你覺得年紀太大對於haas的申請會不會反而是一個負分呢？

Not really. Some of our classmates are older than me and I believe Berkeley doesn't have any preference to young applicants. Admissions office won't take the age into account. Other factors (GMAT, working experience, accomplishments) should be more critical.

另外我想我的high tech和創業背景應該凸顯不太了

It's really hard to say. The application pool is very diverse and the admission office will consider in a more rounded aspect to choose the people fitting Haas.
So my recommendation is just to apply and differentiate yourself from other applicants.

Can you give me a idea what is the minimun score i should meet for both GMAT and TOEFL. If i fail in the exam, what can i do to make up this weakness and get administration's attention. thanks!!

I just saw your post which seems inundated by so many threads here ^^
Hope my reply is still helpful and can give you some confidence.
I believe Haas doesn't look only at GMAT although the average GMAT is above 700. However, if you are within the range of 80%, you are fine. Haas values most your unique personality, working accomplishments and your fits to school.
This year the GMAT of admits from Taiwan is from 670 to 760.
