Hi David, the purpose of this statistics is to make it clearer about how many people go to top-notch business school every year from Taiwan. That's it. Nothing special.
But what you have said does remind me of "The Apprentice". What I would like to emphasize here is the myth of "Winner is the king" or "Winner is always right".
I have to say that I feel you think these students who get into top-notch b-schools are outstanding with "their own unique thoughts" is just because-they get into top b-schools!I know some of them seeking agents, and some of them were not clear about what they want to do in the very first beginning-you can tell that easily from the schools they applied! They were also trapped into the ranking and "brand" myth. Don't think that they are much clearer about what they are doing.
Back to "The Apprentice". In Taiwan, it is now season III for The Apprentice. Today, I deeply felt that this show is totally BS. Task today is to ask celebrities to contribute something for auctions and donate the money from the auctions to the charity. The auction will be held on TV for 11 mins TV show. The task is divided into two parts: one is to produce the TV show, and the other is to negotiate with the celebrities to see what they want to contribute for the auctions. Team A asks more from the celebrities and raised more money, hence, they win over Team B.
What Trump questioned in the board room is to say why Team B's project manager did not take in charge of the "most important" part, negotiating with the celebrities and asking more from them, by his own. The funniest thing is that Team A's project manager also did not take the charge of that part! They get more from the celebrities is just because the lady who negotiates is really good at it. (People who know what is going on for season III and the result will agree with me that the lady is really good.) But Team A wins. And now Trump and his "eyes and ears", George?, attack seriously to the Team B’s project manager on this point. What a BS, man.
That is what I want to say. Both team project managers do the same thing. But the loser is questioned about his decision which is also made by the winner. So, this is the myth of "Winner is the king".
I believe these students do have some great aspects to be admitted by the top b-schools. But I do feel your comment on them is just because they got into Harvard or Wharton or Stanford, not they have some unique thoughts. If they do have unique thoughts, they would not apply schools by ranking and "brand". I don’t think that I have to point out specific person. Not to mention some of them go to seek agents. People with unique thoughts will do this kind of thing? I do not think so.
I knew a MIT Sloan MBA alumnus who is an American. He applied only two schools several years ago, Harvard and MIT. He lives in Boston for many years and decided to stay in this region. He got admitted by both schools. But after comparing these two schools, he decided to withdraw his application from Harvard because he loves MIT's community feeling rather than the highly competitive and utilitarianism culture in Harvard. That is so-called "unique thoughts". I do not think that applying 8 to 10 schools and listed from H/S/W/Chicago/Columbia/MIT/Cornell/Michigan/Yale/UCLA is "unique". Basically, they are great because they got into one, two, or three of them. That MIT alumnus can not believe what the heck we Taiwanese are doing, applying so many schools at one time.
Just my feeling, no offense.
