各位大大,真的很不好意思,我這一題看不懂ㄋㄟ...教教我吧~~ :)
The figure above shows the dimensions of a semicircular cross section of a one-way tunnel. The single traffic lane is 12 feet wide and is equidistant from the sides of the tunnel. If vehicles must clear the top of the tunnel by at least ½ foot when they are inside the traffic lane, what should be the limit on the height of vehicles that are allowed to use the tunnel?

A. 5½ ft
B. 7½ ft
C. 8 ½ ft
D. 9½ ft
E. 10 ft

藍色線條是車身高
紅色線條是1/2 ft
藍+紅=綠=X
由於圖形是半圓,so圖中三角形為直角三角形
4[sup]2[/sup]+X[sup]2[/sup]=左上斜邊[sup]2[/sup]
(12+4)[sup]2[/sup]+X[sup]2[/sup]=右上斜邊[sup]2[/sup]
兩斜邊平方相加=20[sup]2[/sup]
4[sup]2[/sup]+X[sup]2[/sup]+(12+4)[sup]2[/sup]+X[sup]2[/sup]=20[sup]2[/sup]
X=8
so車身高=8-1/2=7又1/2

附上一個更簡單的算法，如下：

半徑10 底邊6

10*10 = 6*6 + 8*8 求得x=8

請問一下，這一句話為什麼不是指最中間的那一個地方呢(就是中間半徑多出來的部份)，而是指旁邊。If vehicles must clear the top of the tunnel by at least 1/2 foot when they are inside the traffic lane.

因為車子是方的，題目又說道路可以寬12ft，所以車子可以開到圓心以左或以右的6ft處，再從這兩點往上算高度

題目的大意是：這個圖是一個隧道的剖面圖，(不知正確的專有名詞如何講，就是車子要開進隧道前會看到前方那個類似半圓形的形狀囉。)
半圓形的底邊是20feet，但中間的馬路(給車子走的)是12feet，而且兩旁剩下的空間要一樣寬。馬路不會佔滿整個隧道的意思。(所以兩旁才會是(20-12)/2)=4)
再者，因為車子在隧道中要預留一個頂端的空間(怕車子卡到上面)，而這個高度要是1/2feet。
問那麼車子的高度最高可以是多少？(也就是我們看到交通標誌的限高高度)

這樣有沒有比較清楚一點了？藍色字是我自己加上比較方便解釋的部分，希望可以幫到你的忙

看了soami大的式子與圖，疑惑好久才注意到x*x的部份soami大已經直接寫為8*8了^O^;
所以順帶小小校正一下：10*10 = 6*6 + x*x
這樣解真的快多了，謝謝 :)

請原諒我問個笨問題，請問? 從哪一個句子可以得知，隧道的高度是一樣的呢? 我原先想的是車道是拱型的，所以車子的高度是最高點是半徑在減掉 1/2 ft????

我一開始也是這樣想的耶......可是答案是B

後來回頭看題目,題目有說"The single traffic lane is 12 feet wide and is equidistant from the sides of the tunnel.",我想這個sides應該要解釋成兩側,所以就會是方形了......所以答案是B沒錯!
