A comparison of USC vs UCLA
-----
Academics: UCLA and USC are at the same level academically. UCLA and USC each have their own strengths. I expect a great education from either school. The UCLA professors I work for express the same sentiment.
Ranking: UCLA is ranked higher. In 2002 the schools were only 1 ranking apart; UCLA 16 vs. USC 17. USC witnessed a big drop while UCLA steadily gained in ranking. I believe UCLA is over-ranked while USC is under-ranked. We can argue forever on why this is the case, but I believe it to be true and I am making my decision based on this belief and the belief that in the long run USC will be ranked higher than UCLA. In fact most people in Los Angeles believe that USC is a better b-school than UCLA. Of course b-school feeder companies realize that UCLA is ranked higher. I don’t plan on staying in a MBA-feeder position for that long. I do plan on work in Los Angeles and the Pacific Rim for a long time. To be honest in the beginning I thought I would attend UCLA over USC simply because of the ranking.
Financial: It will be cheaper for me to go to USC over UCLA. People will say that you should look at the schools average salary and think about the total salary you will earn over your lifetime. I like to believe that in the long run my skills, abilities, and experience, will carry more weight than the school I graduated from.
Student Body: At UCLA we joke that USC stands for the University of Spoiled Children. This is our perception of the USC undergrad student body. I stand by my decision to attend UCLA rather than USC for undergrad. But for an MBA program I would rather go to USC. I work at UCLA and I graduated from UCLA. I know UCLA MBA students, and I like USC MBA students more.
UCLA has some of the highest GMAT and GPA requirements of all business schools. I find this a little odd when you consider UCLA’s ranking. It has been said that UCLA (and Berkeley) tends to attract students who are intelligent and hard working, but not good at working in groups and with teams. Based on my observations I would rather work with Marshall students than UCLA students. I have met many good UCLA students, but I have met many that have turned me off. I am sure that there will be some USC students that I don’t get along with.
When my wife and I first moved to Los Angeles to attend UCLA we became good friends with a Marshall MBA student and his wife. From all the students I met I gained a really good impression of USC’s MBA Student Body.
Location: UCLA is in a better location, there is no arguing this point. On campus the schools are pretty much the same. USC is not in a horrible location, but I wouldn’t live near the campus with my family. Nor could I afford to live near UCLA with my family. Both are in Los Angeles, and that is what is important to me and my family.
Long Term: USC has an incredible entrepreneurship program. In the long term I want to be an entrepreneur. If possible I would like to start a company while I at USC. The USC alumni network is no joke. I don’t expect the network to work magic, but I know it will do more for me than UCLA’s network will, especially when you consider that I want to work in southern California and in the Pacific Rim.
Staff: USC Marshall has better staff than UCLA, hands down. Good staff is important to your success at a MBA program.
Conclusion:
I interviewed at Wharton, but I got dinged. If I got into Wharton I would have attended over USC. Even though I know I would will have a better time at USC and even though my wife doesn’t want to move out of Los Angeles. I grew up in Philly and my sister went to Penn for grad school, so I know from experience that I wouldn’t fit in as well at Wharton.
If you are trying to choose between USC and UCLA I would urge you to think about everything involved. USC is the better school for me, but it may not be the better school for you. If you got into Harvard, Stanford, or Wharton then I would go to those schools.
Ask yourself what school you would choose if the rankings were all the same, then try to figure out if the difference in rankings (which always mediates) will change your mind.
Good Luck
