Cost of living at OSU is really dependent upon one thing, if you have a car or not. The reason is simple, the housing within walking distance is very expensive since everyone wants it, but if you have a car and can drive to class from of campus it is very affordable. Another factor would be how many people you will be living with. There are basically three options.
On Campus:
You won't need a car, you will pay a flat monthly fee which includes internet, phone, electric, water, and rent. I am not sure about graduate students but you may have to pay for a meal plan for the school dining services as I do, or a penalty for not buying a meal plan. Overall I would say this is a huge ripoff. It is very convenient as you are on campus and graduate housing is very close to the business school, but it is very very expensive(I am paying about $700 a month for all of the things I mentioned). I think there are only single suites. Another factor is that only foreign students live in the graduate tower(Jones Tower). Most of those students are Chinese. The end result is none of them ever hang out with anyone else on campus. They pretty much live in a Chinese enclave. I think this defeats the purpose of going to a foreign country to study, but maybe i just don't understand. Even if you didn't live there I am sure it would not be dificult to get to know the Chinese people there if you wanted to. Overall I don't recommend living in campus housing.
If you want to live close to campus housing will set you back atleast $300 per person for decent housing in apartments, and $400 for a house. This is per peron so a 4 person apartment is about $1200 a month with a 4 person house being $1600-$2000. You can get apartments for 1-4 people easily, and houses for 3-10 people.
If you have a car the rent will be almost halved and it will not be by the person. It will be simply how large of an apartment(how many bedrooms) you need, which may save you considerably. Of course if you live away from campus you need to spend about $200 on a campus parking pass and it will take longer to ge to classes.
This does not include utilities. Utilities will be $30 a month for a phoneline and $30 a month for internet. Of course most people my age just have cell phones, and you may not need internet at your house as it is widely available on campus. Water, electricity and gas will be about $30 per person a month total.
