[分享]Self-assessments: getting ready to write

文章Isabelle » 2005-10-29 22:46

這是從一本「graduate Admissions Essays - What works, what doesn't, and why」裡面某一個章節節錄出來的。

----------------------------------------------------------
What makes you unique? Different? Unusual? Sometimes the thing that makes a person really different is something rather personal.
----------------------------------------------------------
As you begin the process of applying to graduate schools, it is a good time to remember who and what your intellectual influences have been. The next set of exercises will assist you in tracing these influences. Answer each of the follwing questions with at least a full sentence but less than half a page.
1.What writers and which particular articles in your field of your field of study have had the greatest influence on the development of your thought?
2.Who were your favorite professors in college, and why? How has each influenced you?
3.What is the bet paper or exam you ever wrote in your major, and what makes it good?
4.What do you consider the most important book, play, article, or film you have ever read/seen, and how has it influenced you?
5.What is the single most important concept you have learned in college?
----------------------------------------------------------
Career Goals
You next exercise is to define your career goal, as nearly as you can.
Consider why you have chosen the particular path you are now pursuing, and make a list of you real reasons for doing so. What attract you to this career? What do you hope to gain? Write these items down the left-hand side of a piece of paper.

When this list of your true motivations is complete, use the right-hand side of you paper to write down other ways you could achieve or obtain each item. This is a way of getting you to consider your other career options, what they are and exactly why you reject them, and perhaps to reconsider if you reject them. Is your career choice really the best one for you?
------------------------------------------------------------
Now, answer these questions to build a historical overview of the etiology of your career choice
1.When did you firstbecome interested in your current career direction? How has that interest evolved?
2.When, as exactly as you can say, did you become sure of this career choice? What event ot thought precipitated that certitude?
3.What work experiences have led you to believe you would like to pursue graduate education?
4.What experience as a volunteer or traveler have influenced your career direction?
5.What experiences from your family life have contributed to this choice?
------------------------------------------------------
What is your biggest accomplishment to date? Take a little time with this one, as it may not be obvious. While you are thinking about it, make a list of “many things I am proud of”
--------------------------------------------------------
Finally, consider the future as well as the past
1.What are your specific career plans?
2.How will graduate education facilitate those plans?
3.What is your five-year goal? Your ten-year goal?
4.Will you be pursuing additional education beyond the program you are applying to now?

Thanks the sharing!
It is really a big help to organize what I have done into those essays.
