[問題]Looking for Emory Alumni and current students

文章bassblur » 2006-02-20 15:34

Hey all, I just got the acceptance of Goizueta business school and therefore want to learn more about this school, especially alumni's career developments. As most prospective students, I do concern whether the brand of "Emory" is strong enough. Please provide some penerating views or examples instead of statistics. Thank you very much for your kind help and advice.

Honestly, if you want to find a decent job in Taiwan, Emory is not that strong. I do not think that many people in Taiwan know about Emory. Since you are talking about the "brand", you could ask your colleagues, family member, and friends to see if they know about Emory, and you could have a rough idea about whether this brand is strong in Taiwan.

From my preliminary research of Class of 2005, I could say that if you want to find a job in prestigious banking or consulting firm, it would be nearly impossible. Again, this is just the conclusion derived from Emory statistics, and if you are interested in other field, chances are much better.

MBABoy:
I hope you had chance to talk to some Emory alumni or current student before you made your conclusion....:)

Here are some examples I know about recent Emory graduates & current students:

1 Taiwanese in 03: Work for Microsoft, Finance Manager (in Seatle)
2 Taiwanese in 04: one got an offer in Phillips in Taiwan
one got an offer in an International Financial Service Company (based in Thailand and then move to Taiwan)

2 Taiwanese in 05: one got an offer in AIG, Product Manager (in Atlanta)
one got an offer in a Marketing Consulting firm (in Atlanta)

2 Taiwanese in 06: one got an offer in Big-Four consulting firm (in Atlanta)

As you can see, we do not have many Taiwanese students for the past couple years. So, this sample size might not be significant. I agree with your concern that Emory might not have very strong brand name in Taiwan before. However, based on the record above, I believe if you are interested in working in US, Emory's brand can definitely help you to land a job in those top-tier companies.

For other banking and consulting jobs:

I knew some of recent graduades & current students from Mainland China were able to get offers from: Accenture, Bank of America, Bain, PWC (some in US, some in Asia with global pay) ...Also, there are couple of 07 Chineses got top-tier IB internships... Nothing is impossible. :)

Please let me know if you have more questions. Thank you!

To Goizueta_TW:

Thank you very much for your information. My previous comment is just my preliminary research from Emory's statistics and I believe it was pretty rough. Sorry for my misleading idea.

From your description, it seems that Taiwanese from Emory found jobs mostly in the U.S. rather than in Taiwan or Asia. I know you have said that the sample size is not sufficient. But, do you have any information regarding Taiwanese's job huntings in Taiwan, HK, or China?

For banking and consulting fields: from your comment, I just saw how "Chinese" perform in these fields and I have no doubt with this truth since China's economics is booming and all QFII want to have a share in this spectacular market. Hiring Chinese with local connections and awareness of local culture will be helpful with these banking and consulting firms' future development in China. But how about Taiwanese from Emory? Do they find jobs in top-notch IB such as Goldman, ML, Lehman, or JP Morgan in the U.S., Taiwan, or HK? Also, are they hired by McKinsey or Bain in Asia? I think that we Taiwanese are much more concerned about how Taiwanese perform in these fields rather than how those "Chinese" perform. :smile

Thank you again for your kindness.

:)

let me add a different perspective to this discussion. Fundamentally, Taiwan is a very insular market with very limited demand for top MBAs.

If you were an employer, why would you pay US$100,000/year when you can get away with paying just US$30-50k/year at the most?

So I think when you pursue an MBA, I personally think you should decide if it is a ROI issue for you.

If yes, think about working outside of Taiwan because the chances of coming back earning global pay are limited even if you attend a top 15-top 20 school.

If no, consider yourself fortunate that you or your family can afford NT 4-5.5 million for 2 years for a piece of paper. = )

In my best guess, I think there are at most 10-15 positions in Tw a year that pay approx 3 mm/year for graduating MBAs.

Strategic Consulting firms with a Taipei presence:
McKinsey (6 positions/yr), BCG, Booz Allen

Investment Banking:
IBD (nearly non-existent), Equity Research (covering tech and financial), S&T (is there such a thing in Tw? My understanding is that it is no where as lucrative as it is elsewhere)....

I personally think an often overlooked area is Private Banking. You make great money, the lifestyle is pretty good, and this is probably one of the few areas that being Taiwanese has its unique advantages.

PE:
There are also a few PE shops, but you have to pay your dues in consulting or banking first.

Opps.. mine is also finished on Jan. 27. However, I believe that you still have the chance because the interviewer told me that the result usually will not be released after 4 to 6 weeks. It is possible that they are still reviewing your profile. Good luck!!!

at least in our firm.....sales trading...it does make money...should be higher than research and might be much higher in future....cos the commission charge is separated..part of comm. was paid to research team...roughly 5-10bps....try to imagine.....however, it is not easy to a native Taiwanese to land a job in S&T....most of them are ABC, American, English.......(except FX, bonds,....)....i think there are more vacancies in research than in IBD or S&T
