Today we are going to look at ways in which legislation can create practical problems, which in turn lead to inventions to solve those problems. You will recall that the home-state act in 1862 granted a hundred sixty acre plots to settlers. This resulted in considerable population growth in the western plains. In that same year the construction of transcontinental railroad was set up by the pacific railroad act. These 2 pieces of legislation made the necessary for ranchers to limit the movement of their cattle instead of letting them roam freely. There weren’t many trees or rocks to use for the fencing material so planting hedges was tried but they took long time to grow. Smooth organized wire fences were another idea but they were not strong enough. Finally inspired by the reaction of cattle to the sharp thorns on vegetation, a new fencing was invented--barbs, sharp, wire points like thorns were twisted onto wire fencing. Not everyone accepted the invention right away. Texans were resistant until the young sales-man staged the dramatic demonstration. He put up an area with new barbed wire and challenged cattle owner to put their wild animals in it. Untrusting spectators kept the distance as the cattle were driven into the enclosure. The animals charged the fence then quickly retreated. Texans were sold and new fence soon became common throughout the plains
