我們是現在就讀Simon Graduate School of Business（U of Rochester）一年級的台灣學生，歡迎有興趣申請2009 MBA/2008 MS program 的同學在這邊提出任何關於Simon問題，在這邊先提供一些簡單的資訊供大家瞭解：

Simon 本身是屬於中小型的商學院，2008秋季加上春季班的MBA的人數大約為150人，其中國際學生的比例佔將近四成，是美國商學院中排名數一數二高的，2008秋季班的台灣學生有8人，春季班則有5人，上一屆的人數也與這屆差不多，因為整體學生人數不多，校內的氣氛相當於一個小社區，有很多的機會可以認識所有的graduate students並建立良好的關係，另外，雖然國際學生的比例高，但很多歐亞洲學生的英文程度都相當高，語言學習/溝通的問題是不需要擔心的

在生活水平方面，Rochester是紐約州的第三大城，大Rochester地區人口約有一百萬，在這邊的生活費並不會太高，扣除學費、書錢等的支出，一個月固定的花費大約在800~1500間（因人而異..），Rochester往西到Buffalo開車需約一小時，往東一小時可到雪城，五小時可到紐約，若能提早確定schedule的話，到紐約的單程機票可低至 USD 49（約55分鐘），相當的划算

Simon學生的concentration以finance為主，學院在前兩年的時候換了新的Dean，除了繼續維持傳統的finance強項外，新的Dean也積極的在其他各個領域衝刺

在找工作方面，CMC這兩年也換新的頭，除了持續的提供學生各種workshop的訓練外，也不斷的安排corporate presentation、on campus interview以及其其他他的off campus job event，但是學生在找工作的時候仍得在networking上下功夫

謝謝您的分享, 我對你們學校的MS program很有興趣, 不斷的在評估finance, technology transfer, 及science & technology commericalization這三個program。但這方面的資訊很少, 尤其是畢業後的就業情況。 還有我是商科背景, 唸後二個不知是否有很大的進入障礙？你能否就您所知提供我一些資訊？

關於technology transfer以及science & technology commericalization，我知道的沒有很多，這兩個MS program都是Simon 在2008新生出來的，所以並沒有以往就業情況的資料可以參考，

唯一可以供你參考的是我注意到technology transfer的八門core course中有六門是跟MBA一樣，如果你沒有時間上的限制的話，也許MBA會是比較划算的選擇

關於MSF的部分，它是Simon的招牌之一，上課幾乎都是跟二年級的MBA一起上，相當的實用，但也正因如此，它其中一項申請條件是你必須已經擁有一個MBA degree，其實MSF基本上就像是個finance concentration 的二年級MBA，如果沒有相當的底子，唸起來可能會相當的辛苦，今年也是有沒有MBA而申請成功的例子，不過這個應是特例，不會太常有這種情形出現，由於我們進來時已經見不到前屆畢業的MSF學生，對於MSF知道的也有限，只知道今年與去年MSF的學生大約都在5-10人之間，國際學生的比例比較高，就業資料的部分我們另外查清楚後再跟你說

2. Simon emphasized an "economic-based" approach. How does it impact your learning?
3. Do you find CMC helpful to international students? Can Simon attract recruiters outside the U.S. to find summer interns?
4. A weakness of Simon I heard is that there are relatively more students without work experiences. Have you noticed this issue?

請問您覺得Simon給您印象最深的如國際合作教學啦或社團活動有哪些?

國際合作的部分，是二年級時會有機會參加到的exchange program

參加的學生可以選擇一個quarter到國外（美國人的國外）的締結學校作一學期的交換學生

主要的國家有：阿根廷、澳洲、比利時、芬蘭、德國、香港、以色列、日本、挪威

學費一樣是繳simon的，所以獎學金等等的依然算數

而在交換學校的學分當然也算數，所以跟自己的同學一樣可以準時畢業

不過要考量的因素也不少：異地的生活費、語言問題、是否會喪失在美國找工作的機會成本等等的

當然反過來說在Simon裡也會見的到一些來交換的國際學生


社團方面，在幾個主要的領域（marketing, finance, operation, consulting, entrepreneur）都有相關的社團在運作

例如finance方面，有Financial Management Association(FMA)、Investment club以及一支學生在run的基金（Meliora Fund）

FMA主要讓學生有更多的機會從不同的切面去瞭解career in finance，經常會辦一些活動如校友講座、專題演講、或甚公司參訪等

Investment Club 及Meliora Fund主要是搞一些investment challenge、portfolio 選股、投資分析、講座等等的

如果你要走finance 這幾個社團對你的幫助都會很大

一來透過他們的活動可以更加瞭解career in finance，二來這些run社團的二年級多半都跟某些重量級的校友比較熟識，三來很多recuriter都把你是否參加這些社團的運作視為你對finance career的commitment

其他如marketing、entrepreneur...等也都是運作良好，對有興趣投身那個field的學生有很大幫助的社團

除了這些比較"硬"的社團，也有些其他如足球、高爾夫球、volunteer、toastmaster...等社團，社團的資訊全部都可以在網頁上找到，有空可以逛逛瀏覽一下

另外除Finance外,Simon還有哪些其他地方是值得一提的?

Simon accounting在學界的聲望也不低

其中一個原因是Simon的accounting教授目前是美國accounting學界的一本重要期刊的主編（Journal of Accounting & Economics(JAE) ）
（與Finance的JFE and JME 情形類似）

Some information regarding your questions.
1.
This is a really subjective question. The following information is on the basis of my perceptions. Class 2008 basically meets four professors, Michael. J. Barclay for capital budgeting, Joanna Wu for corporate financial accounting, James A. Brickley for managerial economics, and Edieal J. Pinker for applied statistic and data analysis. All of them are great, but my favorite is Edieal Pinker. Professor Pinker achieves his bachelor from Columbia and his master as well as PHD from MIT. He impressed me the most because the effort he put in the class and his philosophy of “no pain, no gain”. I believe the whole class goes through a really painful quarter and, eventually, learn a lot. The class was all about how we get useful information from messy real life problems. Following by that process, we establish our solid quantitative analysis and provide solutions.

The whole spirit of Simon courses is founded on quantitative analysis. I will say, if appropriate, that Simon MBA is a program lies between academic master and pure MBA program. Our solutions need to be based on solid and reasonable quantitative analysis. To be honest with you, that spirit doesn’t really affect my learning process because it is the reason for me to choose Simon. My previous working experience and educational background are well aligned with this culture. On the other hand, we also emphasize on communication. We have a communication class that teaches us how to present ideas and communicate with others in business environment and the class will last for totally three quarters to enhance students’ soft skills.

I personally feel CMC is really helpful. I work with my consultant intensively. Starting from my cover letter, resume, to my career path, she definitely helps me a lot. Because of the small class size, every student in Simon has an assigned career consultant, who we continuously work with. Whenever I need and whenever I want, I can make a one-on-one appointment with my consultant. Over all, our CMC may not have the best performance in top 30 schools, but they do wok hard. How much students can gain from CMC is really depended on how wisely students use that resource. Lot of companies comes to Simon for corporate presentation and recruiting events. For your information, we are a major core school for Citigroup. Nearly one-third of newly recruited FMA is from Simon every year.
4.
The average working experience in Simon is 4.5 years and the median is 4.3 years. Compare with other B-school, our average years of working experience is not a minus. Simon does have some Early Leader, who may come to MBA program directly from university or 3-2 program. Most of them are extremely smart and have some outstanding performance in some special filed. Take one of my teammate as an example, he is an early leader and is green. Yet, he is extremely brilliant, providing lot of innovation ideas during case studies. Moreover, he participates junior Olympic before. From many perspectives, I believe he deserves to study and work with us. Furthermore, all international students here have fabulous working experience. Many of them are sponsored by company or have CPA license in home country.

關於機場的部分

Rochester只有一座機場：代碼是ROC

或是網頁：http://www.monroecounty.gov/airport-index.php

機場離學校只有10分鐘的車程

算是相當的近

到了學校後有哪些飯店可以住宿?

downtown附近有很多間hotel

機場旁也有一間Holiday Inn

Simon距離這些地方大約都需5~10分鐘的車程

建議可以到yahoo local (zip code 14620) 尋找

不過這裡沒車行不得

交通問題比較需要考量一下

我因為還在忙在趕其他學校的essays所以最有可能面試的時間是 1月 16左右, 這樣的面試日期會不會太晚?

1/8這一輪的申請結果是在3/30才會出來

所以基本上只要你在結果出來前有interviewe過都是ok的

當然就時間上來講越早interview相對越有利（跟application的道理一樣）

我認為1/16已經是相當早的

最重要的還是要有充足的準備

The virtual tour claims "the course not only intills theory, but also incorporates real life experience." Since I don't see any lab course or projects mentioned on your web site, what exactly real life experience is? Is it Case Study??
