遇到比較的題目,讓人很困擾的就是要在很短的時間內看出是跟誰比.
(B) dollar bill 跟 dollar coin 比如何?

我覺得這題應該是在比"substitute for four quarters"跟"substitute for a dollar bill" <---four quarters 跟 a dollar bill 哪一種比較容易變成substitute

我一開始就把(A)刪掉,因為"rather than"感覺上不是拿來"比較東西"的

我也不會選(B),
因為"a substitute for four quarters" 跟 " a substitute for the dollar bill" 比
所以就會是"a substitute for four quarters" than " a substitute for the dollar bill"...然後把重複的字刪掉,
不過如果把 "a substitute for the dollar bill" 的 "for" 刪掉, 那讀的人就會以為被比較的是"a substitute for four quarters" and " the dollar bill"
所以要把"for"留著, 因為這個選項沒有"for"所以我就沒有選

我不選(D)的理由跟(B)是一樣的

我把(E)刪掉因為我覺得它的結尾很怪,覺得很長很難懂

(B) 如果是這樣:

就不需要 for 了,有什麼沒注意到的嗎?
還原出來之後,似乎 it 不明確要指代哪個名詞了.

再看看 (C)
...the Sacagawea dollar coin will be used as a substitute for four quarters more than (the Sacagawea dollar coin will be used as a substitute) for the dollar bill because it weighs only 8.1 grams, far less than
還原之後似乎也有類似的問題: it =?

我覺得因為每一個選項都有"it" (or "its"), 所以我們就不要在what the "it" refers to 這方面多費神了,

我覺得這題應該是在比"substitute for four quarters"跟"substitute for a dollar bill" <---four quarters 跟 a dollar bill 哪一種比較容易變成 the Sacagawea dollar coin 的 substitute

所以(B)的話應該會變成: Officials at the United States Mint believe that the Sacagawea dollar coin will be used more as a substitute for four quarters than (the Sacagawea dollar coin) will be used as a substitute for four quarters four quarters, which weigh 5.67 grams each.

因為"a substitute for four quarters" 跟 " a substitute for the dollar bill" 比
不過如果把 "a substitute for the dollar bill" 的 "for" 刪掉, 那讀的人就會以為被比較的是"a substitute for four quarters" and " the dollar bill", 因為那個"for" 會告訴讀的人 "a subsitute" 被簡化掉了...

所以我覺得(B)應該不是正確的

我剛剛去google一下這一題,發現有很多debates over whether the correct answer is (B) or (C),但是我看了一下其他人的原因後,我覺得好像不是因為"for"的關係,here are the links to other forums for this particular question

看起來 (B) (C) 的確不在 it 上著墨.

仔細看下去,這兩個選項的意思還不一樣哩!
(B) Sacagawea dollar coin 比 dollar bill 會成為四個 quarter 的替代品,...
(C) Sacagawea dollar coin 比較會成為四個 quarter 的替代品,而不是成為 dollar bill 的替代品,...

這樣我可以了解為什麼 (A) 出現 rather than 了,答案應該選 (C),因為它才是原句意.

從 gmatclub 抓下來的:
"The main point to consider here is what is being substituted.
The meaning of the passage is "The Sacagawea dollar will be used as a substitute for four quarters more than the Sacagawea dollar will be used as a substitute for the dollar bill".

A and B fall because of wrong comparison "more as a substitute"
D is gone, since there is no "for" before the dollar bill
E is too wordy, and hence follows D

Only C makes the correct comparison and maintains grammar.

B. C的 far lighter than 與far less than是都可以嗎?
lighter有錯嗎?

(B) lighter 修飾 8.1 grams 是不合理的, 數字+度量衡的多寡應該用 less

一開使看到more as xxx, 跟as xxx more than..就刪了as xxx more than
因為總覺的more than的位子不一樣　會有distortion..

想問　是不是只有副詞為子變了才會有distortion? 還是more than/less than這種比較級也有?

另外:
B: more as a substitute for four quarters than <for>the dollar bill
這樣應該隊了吧　<假設不管後面lighter的錯誤>

又:
its weight, only 8.1 grams, is far less than (O)
it weighs only 8.1 grams, far less than (O)
it weighs only 8.1 grams, far lighter than (X)

比較級 more...than 位置可以蠻機動的,也不會改變意思,主要原因在於只要比較對象相同就沒有問題.
e.g. a substitute for four quarters more than for the dollar bill 和 a substitute more for four quarters than for the dollar bill 比較的都是 for... 基本上意思無差.

必需硬梆梆比較:
(B) more as... than as...

(A) its weight, only 8.1 grams, is far less than four quarters (X)
(C) it weighs only 8.1 grams, far less than four quarters (do) (O)
(B) it weighs only 8.1 grams, far lighter than four quarters (X)
its weight, only 8.1 grams, lighter than four quarters (X)

"物體"才會有'輕重';"重量"以'大小'來論.
A dollar bill is lighter than a quarter.
The weight of a dollar bill is less than that of a quarter.
A dollar bill weighs less than a quarter (does).
