Tuck of Dartmouth - 2009 Q&A

眼看著Hanover的楓葉由翠綠轉深紅，不知不覺我也到Tuck快兩個月了。這兩個月的體驗很多，包括第一次的期中考、最短的一門課(三週, 六堂課)、數不清的Company briefings, study group meetings 和 parties。

儘管Tuck一直是Top 10的學校，不過也許是每年錄取的人不多，或是地方稍嫌偏遠，Tuck始終是個幾乎沒有台灣人的學校。這也造成了台灣一般的申請者對Tuck，總是缺乏鮮明的印象，不是不清楚Tuck的特色，就是不知如何著手擬訂申請策略。我覺得這對Tuck和台灣申請者雙方都是損失，所以我很願意將我在這邊的一些經驗和對Tuck的認識分享給大家，同時也希望對Tuck有興趣的人可以踴躍提問。

About Tuck
創建於1900年的Tuck是世界上第一所商學院，就如同其母校Dartmouth College是Ivy league 中規模最小的成員，Tuck也一直策略性地將自己定位為business schools 中的boutique，而刻意 保持著top business schools中規模最小的位置。

Tuck只提供full-time MBA program，所以校方所有的資源都是為MBA students所量身打照的。再加上一年僅收240名學生，因此舉凡課業、求職或日常生活，校方都提供全方面的配套，甚至一對一、個人化的服務，所以Tuck 的學生可說是受到無微不至的照顧。


Tuck Strengths
1. General management approach
Tuck視提供the best business leadership education為其最重要的目標，為達成這個目標，專注在general management，就是Tuck認為最好的approach。
例如，我們第一個學期就有一門課叫”Analysis for General Mangers” ，這門課是純case study，它主要的目的就是訓練我們如何從一個general manger的角度去思考一個公司在策略、品牌、財務…等等上的問題與挑戰。同時，它又與其他同時間進行的課程- Financial Analysis (accounting)、Leading Organization (organization behavior)和Decision Science - 相互呼應，例如，我們可能禮拜一才上完financial statements，禮拜三的case就是某家企業的財務問題。因此，雖然我在這的上課經驗還有限，不過我已能充分感受Tuck對於提供best business leadership education的commitment的重視與實 踐.

2. Teamwork
Tucies的teamwork能力，始終獲得 MBA雇主們數一數二評價。我想主要的原因就是Tuck投注許多精力在設計teamwork 能力訓練及培養的活動上，再加上對細節的注重。
例如，和大部分的business schools一樣，Tuck有study group，但Tuck就花時間讓 每個study group去設計它們自己的norms，其中每人必須清楚的 寫下自己的長處和短處，每個人對study group的期望或希望透過study group能發展什麼樣的能力，再將這些整合成每個study group的能力分析和共同願景，並擬訂策略去達成個人和團隊能力的提昇。同時，每個 study group還有一個二年級的mentor會定時提供他們咨詢或經驗分享，而校方也會和這些mentor保持聯繫，以確保每個study group都以他們最好的方式在運作。

另外，大部份單身的一年級Tuckies都住在學校宿舍，再加上其他的Tuckies也都住在附近，所以學校本身就像一個大家庭一樣，這也是Tuck在teamwork能力建立，會如此成功的一個重要原因。

3. Alumni network
Tuck目前的校友大約有8500名，規模並不大，但凝聚力是有名的強。這點可從校友的捐款率看出：Tuck校友的捐款率是超過60%的。而這反映在求職上就是，當景氣好時，你可以得到很多額外的幫助或是優勢； 而當景氣不好時，你至少可以有個工作。例如，當2001年，景氣在谷底時，Tuck的alumni panel，每個人就至少雇用一個當年畢業的Tuckie。他們會這麼做完全是出於他們對Tuck的熱愛，同時也是對Tuck培養學生能力的信任 – 他們相信就算在景氣谷底，Tuckie也能對公司做出卓越的貢獻。


Tuck Replacement
Tuck雖然是以general management著名，不過其實學生就業的選擇還是以finance和consulting 為大宗。每年大約都是 1/3 的finance ，1/3的 consulting 和 1/3 的other s (including marketing, general management, nonprofit, healthcare…)。
因為Tuck是所有big banks和big consulting firms的core school，所以我們可以在學校就進行1st round interview ，如果要去Boston或New York做 2nd round interview也都還在可接受的範圍內 (Bos: 2-hr drive, NY: 5-hr drive)。

另外值得一提的就是Tuck大約有5%的人去做PE，而這大概是因為Tuck有一個Private Equity center和距Boston近有關係 (A lot of PEs in Boston, and a lot of Tuckies in them)。

Tuck真的是一所很特別的學校，但不知道是不是真的因為台灣申請的人比較少的關係，長久以來，Tuck並沒有錄取太多台灣本地的申請者，我相信，會去申請Tuck的人，都具有一定程度的背景經驗，也同樣都被Tuck的特質所吸引，但這麼多年以來，不少的台灣申請者都被拒絕了，在看過您的背景之後，第一時間更會讓人有"原來Tuck會錄取的台灣人背景必須要這麼強"這樣的感覺，雖然機會渺茫，基於夢想及目標，我還是會盡全力去試試，但為了讓自己能更凸顯Tuck所希望尋找的特質，不知道能不能麻煩請您先分享一下，就您的感受及瞭解，Tuck當初錄取您的主要原因是什麼？您有申請過其他哪些學校？是否都被錄取呢？最後，Tuck學生是否有共同的特質呢？相當感協您的熱心分享喔！:)

謝謝你的過譽，其實我覺得我的background和很多人比起來並不是太強，
首先，我太老了： 年過三十，其實不是頂吃香。
再來，工作稍嫌無趣了些： engineer 出身，僅是MBA大宗申請者之一。
而且，目標也很一般： consulting，好像是不知要做什麼的人的典型回答。
還有....(我應該可以再寫十點以上吧)！
其實，每個人都有自己相對的強弱勢，所以就如其他板上的前輩所說，隱惡揚善，將自己的優點發揮到極致，每個人都有機會。

說到Tuck為什麼錄取我，我想相當程度，是我在differentiation上下了蠻多的功夫。 什麼是differentiation呢？ Differentiation就是不要讓admissions office一看你的application就把你丟到典型的台灣申請者、典型的工程師或典型的.... 尤其Tuck是個小學校，所以admissions offices更希望每個收進來的學生都能對Tuck有一些特殊的貢獻 - 價值、經驗、觀點....。 這一點也可從Tuck的Essay題目中看出。

說到Tuck學生的特質，那我可以告訴你： website上說的都是真的。 若還有什麼是上面沒有的，那我想就是這一點吧: "Tuckies are the least aggressive among b-school students." 這句話是我在申請時，一個2nd year告訴我的，其中喻意深遠.....

最後，你如果要問我有沒有上其他的學校? 我的回答是"有"，不過我就不說是什麼學校了。 因為決定學校的原因很多，很難三言兩語說清楚，所以請讓我保留一下，謝謝！

真的是很感謝您在忙碌之中抽空回答，我之前也曾經跟Tuck校友(是一個美國人，
申請前在香港工作）有過聯繫，我把他給我的回答分享給大家，希望能對要申請
Tuck的人有幫助，有不足的部分，再麻煩您補充。

以下是我問關於Tuck的一些特質：

In terms of characteristics about Tuck students, while there are all
sorts of different personalities at Tuck, everyone is extremely
friendly, outgoing, and willing to help. There is a very strong
community feel with the school. The school emphasizes
teamwork, probably more than most other business schools'
there are lots of group projects and assignments. So, as a result,
there is a strong community sense that everyone is working
towards the same goal. People are competitive, but not in a
negative sense and not in a way that would hurt other people.
Overall, there are a lot of great people.

As for unique things that I've learned, its hard for me to compare
since I don't have much experience with other business schools. I
have definitely learned a lot of great things in the classes' Tuck
puts particular stress on teamwork (as I mentioned), on ethics,
and a few other things that some other business schools may not
(such as modeling, etc.). You learn a lot from the experiences of
your classmates. You pick up a great network Tuck's alumni
network is by far the strongest, and almost all alumni will call or e-
mail you back immediately if you contact them. Its very impressive
in that sense.

One drawback (or positive, depending on how you look at it) it's
remote. It's two hours to the nearest major city ( Boston ). If you
love being outside (hiking, skiing, etc.), then it's a great place. If
you are a city person, than it could be a different story.

In terms of expenses, outside of tuition, I probably spend about
$2000 per month (as a first-year, if you live on campus, more of
your expenses are included in the Tuck bills - so, this is purely an
estimate). Second year tends to vary depending on your living
situation (living with other Tuck students, an apartment in town vs.
a house, etc.). Some months it probably goes up to maybe
$3000. In short, I've found business school to be pretty
expensive - there are a lot of things going on. A lot of classmates
do spend money pretty freely, since there are so many things
going on. Then again, there are also people who are a lot more
careful with their expenses.

這是關於是否一定要on-campus interview:

Visiting Tuck would be useful because not only would it give you the
chance to make sure in person that it's the best fit, but it would
also help convince the school of the strength of your interest.

That being said, it's not critical and probably will not affect your
chances. I was living in Hong Kong at the time and could not visit
the school. I interviewed with an alum in HKG and got in without
ever having visited. I also know that the Admissions Department
conducts a lot of phone interviews with international students who
can't make it. If you truly can't make it to campus, I think they
understand that. If you were in the US, that's one thing, but being
an international student gives you a little space in this area. As
long as you find a way to show just how serious you are about
Tuck (both in the application and in the interview), you'll be fine.

Tuck的financial aid只能off-line申請，所以我當初忘了。

Financial aid的內容包括獎學金和貸款，詳情會註明在admission letter上或在congradulation call中口頭告訴你。 一般而言，學校會將學費和生活費在扣除獎學金後全額借給你，只是外國人的利率大約是9%左右，相當貴。

至於申請手續很簡單，我記得只要填好申請單，再附上你的報稅或繳稅證明及薪資證明寄回即可。 單據如果有英文版最好，實在沒有，將匯率和欄位用英文註明清楚也可。

我後來發現今年的申請方式有點變動，不需要附上繳稅及薪資證明，變成要寫一篇500字的自傳，另外附上申請表（如附檔），每一輪申請也有deadline。

首先謝謝donahue922跟大家分享今年的新申請方式。 真不好意思，我沒去update這方面的變化。

不過有一點還是沒變，就是Financial aid的deadline和Application的deadline是不同天，Financial aid晚了一到兩個禮拜，這也是當初我為什麼會忘記的原因。

Tuck的scholarship是merit-based，所以我想那是為什麼今年會多要求一篇自傳的原因。另外admission和scholarship是兩個不同的processes，就學校而言，一定是先決要不要收這個學生後，才去考慮要不要給獎學金，所以不必擔心申請獎學金會影響申請的機會。

我知道現在Hanover真是美得要命,希望能有時間上去走走,我們是兩間注重Teamework的學校,如果能聚一聚一定很有趣!

趁這個機會告訴一下今年的申請者,如果有機會真的要去學校看看,因為很有可能未來你要在這裡生活兩年,學習,所以學校上課的感覺,同學間的氣氛真的很重要.

以我自己來說,當初我跑了一趟東西岸. 在其中一間學校的Class Visit中,看到老師上課引導討論的情況. 當下就就決定該校不適合我.
