正解(D)中的...who sailed...gathering...

邏輯上來說並不是關代省略 earth (which gathers...地球不可能gather)
所以後面這個gathering是甚麼用法阿?
是不是跟下面這題的正解(D)的using是同一種用法?
因為分詞構句的話兩個V中間應該要有逗號
而從這兩題看來 表伴隨修飾的話也可以不必有逗號摟?

Good question! It pushes me to find some examples to clarify my concept that you asked.

1. Ving做伴隨修飾語不加逗點的話,只修飾離它最近的名詞
ex:
---D選項 using modify them- 他們用聽覺信號
---OG93, By a vote of 9 to o, the Supreme Court awarded the Central Intelligence Agency broad discretionary powers enabling it to withhold from the public the identities of its sources of intelligence information.

Here, enabling it to withhold from the public modifies powers.

2.Ving做伴隨修飾語加逗點的話,修飾前面子句所伴隨的狀態
ex:
---OG43, Five fledgling sea eagles left their nests in western Scotlamd this summer, bringing to 34 the number of wild birds successfully raised since transplants from Norway began in 1975.

....我所舉的例子都不適用你上面兩個解釋ㄝ.....

如本題來說，....earth gathering... 地球不可能主動會gather

我知道 N ving中的ving可以修飾N
不過我所舉的兩個例子都是修飾所在句子的動詞
而且這樣的用法 OG裡面並沒有。

此選項依然符合第一條件的說明

因為 who first sailed around the Earth整塊 是navigators補語,可忽略不看
而gathering就近修飾navigators,這就像which就近指代有時也會忽略就近的地方副詞而修飾 前面的名詞一樣

~已解决，我剛發至yahoo國外知識去問，native speaker是可用by using，只是gmat要求簡潔吧~

我自己也好奇，多一個by行不行

至於OG是有句子用using修飾人的動作，沒有寫by。

問一下（C）的錯點：除了similar to不放在句首之外，還有哪裡有問題嗎？

小弟的理解是原句有to gather information about its size and curvature of its surface表目的，但是在（C）中卻變成關係副詞where裡面的修飾語，改變了句子的原意甚至是重心。

還請大家指教！

這樣的觀察好像有點道理哦!

另外發現的是原句to...所對應的主詞observations是不合理的.i.e. observations怎麼會去gather information呢?
(C)有一個頗嚴重的修飾錯誤,就是where修飾the Earth,造成句意完全不對了.

similar to放句首應該沒問題的啦!
