Cornell Johnson School 1st yr MBA student taking questions!

Hello everyone,

I'm Cornell MBA 1st yr student and also a admission ambassador. However, I'm not involved in the admission selection^.^ This year, we have five Taiwanese students. Cornell located in Ithaca, a small collegetown in NY state (4hrs drive to NY City).We have the beautiful scene and friendly classmates. Cornell have some unique points:
1. Immersion: A well organized curriculum and for every major field, such as brand marketing, managerial finance, investment banking, and etc. Moreover, last year, we add one consulting focus for those who are committed to pursue consulting jobs.

2. Intense, collaborative community: deliberately small size class(250/yr) provides students with close interaction within class.

3. Cornell connection: Access to the vast research, teaching, and alumni resources of the largest Ivy League university

Basically, every big IB, consulting, and consumer product companies visit Johnson School every year. We got very strong alumni network in east coast finance firms. If you are interested in any specific field, please feel free to raise your questions to me.

除了Goodspeed提到的重點之外，我覺得有一件值得一提的是Cornell是一所對career switcher非常友善的學校。Undergraduate不是念business related的人的比例非常的高。像今年Cornell所收的五個台灣學生，有四個人念的不是business related。

此外，有一個很實際的點就是Cornell念書的生活費不算太貴，不論是房租或是物價都滿不錯的。

硬要我說缺點的話 就是地點有點偏遠 要去各個地方面試比較累
但是 就是因為這樣 同學間的感情相當好 對於Cornell的向心力特別強
這是我最喜歡的一點 直到現在 就算同班的同學在美國各地工作
我們仍然會計劃在 感恩節 or 新年假期一起出遊

Hi there! I am interested in Cornell MBA program. Through the information I got on the website and from MBA tour, I found that "Immersion" is a core curriculum emphasized by Cornell MBA program. So, could you share your experiences and demonstrate some exemples about this corriculum? Thanks a lot!

Immersion 的作用就像是在選主修一樣
當選定Immersion，MBA1年級下學期的課表也是自動選好的。(second semester)
每個Immersion都有課程套餐。我簡單介紹一下：

Immersion (7種):
EPE (Private equity)：這個工作最難找，但是薪水最高。
SBI(strategic brand immersion): 主修strategy和marketing相關課程，通常畢業後往這兩種職位發展
MFI (managerial finance immersion): CFO之路，往公司內部財務發展
IB (投資銀行)：如其名
CMAM (capital market asset management): Sales and Trading
SGE (sustainable global enterprise): 和環工有點像，希望利用公司的資源，讓環境不要再惡化。是最近滿紅的課題。
SSO : 主修ops和logisic的immersion
Custom: 自選 (沒有immersion，課程自己選)

Consulting focus: 任何immersion都可以選consulting focus, 除了IB不行。

Immersion有一個好處是寫在resume上，可以讓recruiter看得出學生對某方面的commitment，像是career switcher如果要switch到那個領域，選對應的immersion就會有所幫助。

我想問一下Cornell的housing options. 我去interview的時候, the alumni that interviewed me 建議 on campus housing. 他說他太晚才決定要住哪所以都沒有on campus的可以選. 可是我看Cornell 的new student forum, 上面的學長姊都說 most MBA's live off campus. 請問你們會suggest on campus or off campus? on campus的話學校網站上有四個地方: Maplewood Park, Hasbrouck, Schuyler, Thurston. 有可能跟 undergrad students 住一起嗎? 還是各自上課地方會很遠? 多謝回覆!

關於on-campus housing, 我們同學多數住在Maplewood Park(mixed) or Hasbrouck(only for graduate). 兩個都是走路10~20分鐘到學校,我本身是住off-campus,有問題可以寄email給我, goodspeed.yang@gmail.com

Maplewood 通常是四人一間...妳也可以申請一人一間的....
不知道今年的價格多少...我第一年住那邊, $485 per month,
但是聽說年年漲.....現在不知道漲到多少....好處是
(1)水電全包+網路
(2)有冷暖氣(夏天你就知道有冷氣是多幸福的事)
(3)離學校真的近, 晚上有夜間公車(最晚的是1230am)..
公車站牌就在 Johnson 門口, 走路回家也很快

不過呢 個人覺得那樣的價格有點貴...後來就搬出來了

Hasbrouck不錯....很搶手...離學校還可以...比 Maple遠一點..一樣水電全包
外加很多老人住那邊 ( Phd, Family...) 如果混熟 常會有很多好吃的 :P
第一年不適應環境的話 可以先住學校宿舍...等熟了之後..第二年再去校外找

Cornell是個很好的地方....去唸書過的人 都會很想念那邊...恭喜摟 !

Thanks for your replies ccuturandot and Goodspeed! 我check 了Maplewood 跟Hasbrouck. 現在都沒有包網路了 T.T. Hasbrouck 好像不能租一個人的apartment 只有studio, 可是studio 貴很多. 如果是要租2 bedroom的是要事先找到roommate然後兩個一起租嗎? Maplewood是不是比Hasbrouck 方便? 我想我第一年還是住學校好了因為對Ithaca 完全不熟, 也不會有車. 還有請問一下會建議租一整年嗎? 還是just for the academic year till May?
