My name is Kevin and I am the first year MBA students at Duke.
This year we have four Taiwanese students entering Duke MBA class of 2011, all coming from different backgrounds including finance, engineering, hi-tech, and entertainment. We understand the MBA application may be a daunting and painful process and you may want to get more information about specific schools, so we are here to help you relieve your anxiety and ease your pain! We would love to take any questions you may have regarding Duke MBA application, future career, our culture, etc.

Some information about myself,
Prior to MBA, I worked at KPMG for two years and then worked in a local securities firm (underwriting department) for one and half years.
My career focus is in corporate finance.

I will also invite the other TW folks to join me to share more info about our MBA life/answer questions about different careers.

Hope this thread can help you better understand our program and unique Team Fuqua.

My name is Shirley. I'm also the first year MBA student at Duke.
Before coming to Fuqua, I worked at Ogilvy & Mather advertising for one year and Sony VAIO marketing for another two years.

I know lots of MBA programs look pretty similar in terms of website intro, so for people who might feel interested in Duke, I want to go deeper to share some insider information about Duke strengths.

1) Although Duke has a good reputation in each of the main field, it is especially strong in "Marketing,
General Management, Healthcare, and Social Entrepreneurship."
We have several strong programs, institution, and clubs specializing in above ares.

2) We call ourselves as "Team Fuqua", because all of our core courses are built on " intensive team assignments."
I learned a lot from my diverse team, which is consisted of members from politics, law, finance, air force, and
even professional poker player background!! In addition to academic teamwork, starting from the day one orientation,
Duke focuses a lot on "team building activities outside of class" such as Triangle outdoor training, Olympic games,
and house building for NPO.

3) Duke values global perspectives and has around 40% of international students.
Academic programs such as GIE, GATE and GCP also foster students to think outside of US.

4) We do have lots of fun events at Fuqua !!!
- Fuqua Friday : After a busy week, free beers and food are provided for students to hang out and relax.
- Fuqua Vision : Super hilarious video show about MBA life. Ex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNv2xIrfh88
- Parties: Casino night, 80's party, Around the world party........
- Talent Show
My favorite one is "Campout for NCAA basketball game ticket." Blue devil and coach K are awesome !!!

感謝熱心的兩位，有幾個問題想請教：

1. 因為托福的關係，一直拖到R2(明年一月）才能提出申請，想請問一下，四位今年被錄取的台灣學生，各是哪一輪提出申請的呢？

2. 兩位面試的時候，是在哪裡面試的呢？Fuqua只有提供幾個城市可以進行面試，而且只有特殊情況才採電話面試，所以想請教一下兩位的建議。

3. 兩位有無參加LI？對LI的感想？是不是真的對國際學生很有幫助？

4. 可否大概說明一下一天的schedule？

5. 兩位有提到學生的背景很diverse，想再進一步瞭解一下，就目前的感覺，是否學生的personality也是很diverse?還是說Fuqua有prefer哪種特質？

6. 目前最不能適應的是哪一方面呢？

7. 兩位認為Fuqua的缺點為何？

1. 今年的四位台灣同學 有一位是在第一輪 另外三位是在第二輪錄取的 所以別擔心 第二輪仍有很大的機會

2. 我們都是在台北與Fuqua校友面試 去年的情形是如果不能飛去Durham的話 就是在台灣與校友面試
也有人透過電話與adcom面試 不過是少數
我個人覺得透過電話面試比較難以產生共鳴
如果時間金錢允許的話 飛到亞洲鄰近國家面試是還不錯的選擇
面對面溝通總是較可以從表情及手勢了解面試官的想法 增加彼此的互動

3. 一般來說台灣的學生都必須參加Language Institute (LI)
除非你之前就讀英語系 曾在英語系國家留學 或曾在這些國家工作過
LI為期兩週 我認為最大的幫助是能在最短的時間內與來自世界各地的同學們成為要好的朋友
目前幾個和我一起準備intern 練習面試的死黨 都是我在這兩個禮拜認識的
參加LI的同學可以在一年級的non-quantitative courses (i.e. marketing, strategy, etc)的期末考裡有多一小時的應試時間
而且兩年在Fuqua的學業裡都可以跟Communication Institute的Faculty在每個禮拜預約半小時的language session
(你可以自由選擇如何利用這個session, 例如interview practice, cover letter review, or just chat)

4. 一年級的每一天的schedule其實都不盡相同 我以Fuqua Fall 1的schedule提供給你做參考
AM 6:30 wake up
AM 7:00 Breakfast
AM 8:00-AM 10:15 Statistics Class
AM 10:30-PM 12:45 Accounting Class
PM 12:45-PM 1:30 Lunch with classmates
PM 1:30-PM 3:30 Prepare cases for team meeting
PM 3:30-PM 6:00 Team meeting
PM 6:00-PM 6:30 Dinner with classmates
PM 6:30-PM 7:00 Dress up for corporate presentation
PM 7:00-PM 8:30 Corporate presentation & Networking
PM 9:00 Go home
PM 9:30-10:30 Teamwork Case write-up
PM 10:30 Prepare for tomorrow’s classes

5. 今年的一年級(Class of 2011)大約有450人
就我普遍的感覺 大部分的同學都很熱情 友善 互助
舉例來說 我就常常得到同學主動給我的feedback
(例如我常常說話太急 手勢太多 眼神不夠集中等等) 對我準備面試非常有幫助
如果說要討論Fuqua喜歡的特質 我會說是collaborative leadership
Fuqua相信要成為一個好的領導者 本身一定也要是一個很好的team player

6. Fuqua相當重視team work 反映在學業上是教授給我們相當多的team assignments
甚至有幾們課是100% team assignment 沒有個人homework
這時team meeting是否有效率 能否與team members在最短的時間內完成作業就是很大的關鍵
以我個人來說 team meeting往往佔用了很多時間 因此我最不適應的是自己個人的時間常常不夠用
在MBA裡 如果能做好時間管理及team meeting 我認為這兩年將會過得很充實愉快 也會有更多時間準備求職

7. 學校所在位置的Durham並不屬於一個大城市
因此以Banking 及Consulting 求職來說 第一輪是on-campus interview
但在第二輪之後 同學就必須飛到NYC, Chicago 等地參加Super day
所以會比其他在大城市的學校的同學花更多時間在交通上
但是我認為 有時候學校的地理位置不在大城市 你反而可以利用這樣的情形推銷自己
11月時有同學特地飛到Chicago參加Goldman Sachs (H.K office) 的info session 全場都是Chicago和Kellogg的學生
但是在networking的時候 當他說他們是從Fuqua來的
所有的bankers都忍不住驚嘆一聲 這時候我們就有更多機會增加跟recruiters 的互動

另外 再補充一下 我覺得Fuqua的CMC(Career Management Center) 一直積極與不同的recruiters接觸
例如Fuqua本來不屬於總部在Washington State的Amazon的core school
但今年我們就成功邀請到Amazon到校舉辦corporate presentation 並爭取得到Fuqua on-campus interview 的機會
學校也在今年建立了international resume book (for China, Singapore, Brazil, Russia, etc.)
幫助想在美國以外其他國家的就業的同學增加獲得雇主青睞的機會

我們四人只有三位需要托福成績
分數大約介於104-107之間
基本上托福成績只要超過100分申請上就不會有太大問題
因為你的英語能力會在面試時再被檢驗一次
不過以MBA的學習及日後的求職角度來看
若能在台灣就把英語能力培養到business professional的程度是再好不過了

基本上就是 walk me through your resume, why MBA, why Duke, leadership experience, team work, contributinos等等
我覺得最重要的是把自己的職涯規劃想清楚 在面試中清楚表達出MBA將如何幫助你完成你的職涯目標
另外記得要具體點出why Duke的理由以及為何自己可以適合Team Fuqua的校風

感謝您忙碌之中的分享，我後來已經確定是跟一位在台灣麥肯錫的校友面試，面試完之後再來分享！

昨天與台灣校友在他的辦公室完成面試，時間大概45～50分鐘，問題主要以時間切分成兩大部分：

1.過去的經歷：
一開始先讓我簡單的自我介紹，之後依照我所經歷的每一個時期提出以下不同的問題-
a.The most memorable experience.
b. Leadership example.
c. An event shows your difference with other applicants.
d. A frustrated situation.
每時期是挑其中一個問題來問，不過如果要準備最好是每個時期都要準備這四個問題，避免臨場想不出來

2. 未來的計畫
a. Short and long-term goals
b. Why MBA
c. Why Fuqua
d. 另外針對我的計畫及想法再提出一些問題

最後就是讓我問問題，校友相當的nice，會幫忙指導resume中要注意的地方，很感謝他百忙之中撥空。

另外，今年Fuqua改成只有在幾個城市進行面試，我原本選擇日本東京，但是Fuqua臨時通知只開放除夕夜那天進行，所以我就寫信請學校考慮提供台灣當地的校友面試，之後Fuqua也接受了。
