Which 代替前面的主詞genetic material
這樣的話, 如果後面不用動詞 consist，後面的子句就會沒有動詞

而關代改分詞的觀念即是
Chromosomes are regarded today as the major
carriers of genetic material, (which) consist of DNA and
various types of protein.

把本句的 which 拿掉..然後動詞 consist 改成分詞即是關代改分詞
所以選項 D 若which 沒省略，一定要接動詞
而如果把本句的 which 省略，動詞改分詞..則A就是正確的

原本未簡化的樣子應該是which consists of ~~~（which關代當主詞，表material，consists 則表示主動狀態的動詞）
簡化的程序為省略which關代，將後面的主動動詞加上ing即完成！
