這題我當時有將CD上的解釋摘出，挺有道理的，總而言之， that 指的是469,000，你倒是可以自問自答，如果選the number，是指誰呢?
至於alone 與 by themselves相比，前者較好

先来解决alone和by one'sself的问题，C的问题出现在the number of trucks by themselves的中心词是number，单复数问题。错。
A中the numbers，错。
看整句意思：(B) that number...
1914：car + truck = 469,000
1929 ：truck = 469,000*2

如果选the number，句子意思变成：
1914：car + truck = 469,000
1929 ：truck = car*2

造成469,000无意义

其實我的看法,
覺得(A)選項的錯誤, 主要是因為numbers of=many, 所以(A)選項沒有邏輯句意,
而(C)的by themselves沒有單複數的問題, 指的是trucks,
把沒畫線的部分連在一起看吧:
twice the number of trucks by themselves came off the assembly lines
句意指的是從生產線上被製造出來的卡車, 比以前的數字多兩倍,
所以, 這裡的alone我以為不等同by themselves,
一個強調"單獨"(只有trucks沒有cars), 一個強調"以自己的能力"
雖然文法上, alone和 by themselves可以互換,
但我以為那多是用在有生命的主詞上, 強調靠自己單獨的能力,
(C)會變成莫伯伯說的, 文法100分, 閱讀0分

但是我比較想知道(C)的the number of 和(B)的that number of能否互相代替,
我同意(B)的that number是指a total of 469000,
但是(C)的the number是否也有同樣的意思?
有人能解答我的疑惑嗎?

1914年 美國一共製造了469,000輛汽車與卡車, 但是在1929年, 卡車的製造數量幾乎是該數字(469,000)的兩倍.

作答:
(D)(E)不選 --> 因為慣用語 as ... as
(A)不選 --> " the numbers of "錯, 因為習慣用法為" a/the number of"
(C)不選 --> "by themselves"錯, 因為此通常在主詞唯有生命的情況下使用 (引用wangdaven的想法)

再者, (B)的"that number of..."與(C)的"the number of"比較時, 前者"that"所指的是"469,000"這個數字, 後者"the"則是指trucks的數量, 矛盾的是, 由於原題目中並沒有提到Trucks單獨的產量, 因此, 若此提選擇"the number of trucks"的話, 將會使得句意怪異.
